Aloe vera: The Gentle Healer

This widely grown ornamental plant is a member of the kingdom Plantae and belongs to the Aloe genus. It grows in wild mass across the tropical countries throughout the globe . They are cultivated due to it’s rich benefits in the fields of agriculture, medicine and beautification.


This stemless or very short stemmed plant is 60-100cm tall and spreads by its offsets. Their leaves are green in colour. They are thick and fleshy. There is dense fluid inside the leaves.


This plant produces flowers witnessed only during the summers. Each flower is pendulous with a yellow tubular corolla 2-3 centimetres long.


The Aloe vera leaves contain phytochemicals such as acetylated mannans, polymannans, anthrones and a few others to be named.

Aloe vera forms arbuscular mycorrhiza .

( Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus is the kind of mycorrhiza that lets the fungus penetrate into the cortical cells of the roots of a vascular plant.)

In this case, this formation in the Aloe vera plants causes symbiosis that allows the plant a better access to the mineral nutrients, specifically, food for itself from the soil.


This species is famous for its wide range of medical values. They are grown on a wide scale as an ornamental plant. They are also grown due to their interesting flowers, forms and succulence. The succulence enables them to survive at unfavourable geographical extremes, specially referring to the low rainfall areas and hence, the temperature conditions as well.
